Update from Senator Dahle - 07.14.2023

Dear Neighbor‚

I hope you had an exceptional Independence Day with friends and family. Schools are out‚ the pools are open‚ and summer is officially upon us.

Here at the Capitol‚ it was another eventful month filled with meetings with constituents‚ committee hearings‚ and Senate sessions. June is always bustling with discussions and debates pertaining to the state budget. Per the California Constitution‚ a state budget must be passed by both the Senate and the Assembly by midnight on June 15th each year. This year‚ the Senate passed the budget (SB 101) on the morning of June 15th with a vote of 32-8‚ and then passed subsequent budget bills on June 27th. While I definitely do not agree with everything that is included in this year’s budget (watch my floor statement here)‚ and opposed the overall budget because of its many deficiencies. I was very pleased some of my specific requests to be included in the 2023 state budget were honored.

These requests mean that The Nickels Soil Lab in Colusa County will receive much needed funding to further their research of soil and irrigation technology. The Williams Fire Protection Authority will receive state funding to construct a new fire station‚ and individuals who received a settlement from PG&E as a result of the Zogg Fire will not have to pay taxes on those settlements. In addition‚ I wanted to provide you with some other 2023 budget highlights pertaining to our district that will greatly benefit our communities. Nevada County will be constructing a new state-of-the-art courthouse. California State University‚ Chico will be constructing a Human Identification Laboratory allowing students and professors to participate in important on campus research. And last‚ but certainly not least millions of dollars will go towards Lake Tahoe Conservancy and Sierra Nevada Conservancy which will greatly help to conserve and protect some of our districts many natural resources in the Lake Tahoe and Sierra Nevada regions.

It is an honor to serve you‚

Senator Brian Dahle

P.S. Here’s a quick State Capitol trivia question for you: Who is the Greek Goddess sculpted on the front of the California State Capitol’s main entrance?

Around the District

Cattlemens Spring Field Tour

Members of Team Dahle took part in the Cattlemen’s Association Spring Field Tour in Modoc County. They were able to enjoy the beautiful weather in Likely and tour West Valley Reservoir and a local sturgeon farm. The day concluded with a nice lunch in the company of the Modoc County Cattlemen’s Association.

Sierra Nevada Conservancy

Team Dahle attended a tour of the Sierra Nevada Conservancy in Plumas County where they learned how the Sierra Nevada Conservancy is working to rebuild communities and restore timberlands in Plumas County that were lost in the 2021 Dixie Fire. I appreciate the great work the Sierra Nevada Conservancy does for the communities of District 1‚ and I’m very pleased they will be receiving much deserved and needed funding from the State Budget Act of 2023.

Lake Tahoe Tour

Assemblywoman Dahle and I took a very informative tour of Lake Tahoe to learn about the work to control Milfoil Algae and runoff‚ and to preserve the world-famous clarity of the lake. I’m grateful for the dedication of local community groups‚ volunteers‚ and leaders who diligently strive keep Tahoe’s pristine waters blue!

At The Capitol

Senator Dahle and Lola Fitzgerald

I was excited to welcome Lola Fitzgerald; a California high school champion skeet shooter‚ to my office to talk about her opposition to Assembly Bill 28. Lola explained to me how AB 28’s proposed tax on ammunition would place a large burden on her and her teammate’s ability to afford to practice their sport. Lola also did a phenomenal job speaking in front of the Senate Committee on Governance and Finance later in the day. I was happy to support Lola and her teammates and oppose AB 28.

On June 7th‚ I was excited to welcome Jo Campbell and Lynn Dorroh of Hill Country Health and Wellness Center to the State Capitol. Hill Country‚ along with nonprofits of the year from other districts‚ were recognized with a special luncheon on the west steps of the Capitol. Trivia Answer

The Goddess who is sculpted above the entrance to the capitol is…Minerva!

Minerva was believed to be born fully-grown‚ her sculpture above the Capitol entrance symbolizes California’s becoming of a State without first becoming a territory in 1850.
