In many Sierra County communities‚ the state highways are the local main streets‚ and I want to alert you to some important news affecting the highways in Sierra City and Sierraville.
After recent traffic studies in both towns‚ Caltrans has decided to raise the speed limits on sections of Highway 49 in Sierra City and on sections of Highways 49 and 89 in Sierraville.
As a rule‚ limits are set at the 85th percentile of the speed drivers actually travel‚ and Caltrans found the current limits are too low in these areas.
I’ve heard concerns that higher limits will hurt these peaceful Sierra communities‚ so I want to make sure you aware of two public hearings coming up. These offer a chance to share your opinion before the decision is final.
The hearing on Sierra City will be Tuesday‚ March 4‚ at 1:30 p.m. at the Board of Supervisors Chambers in Downieville. More details are here.
The hearing on Sierraville will be Tuesday‚ March 18‚ at 10 a.m. in the Loyalton Social Hall. More details here.
I am committed to ensuring that Caltrans works hears residents’ voices and puts their safety first.
